This advertisement infuriated me so much that I had to email all the associated organizations about it. You have a voice to change things. Remember that. Below is the email I had crafted to the communication branches.
To whom it may concern:
I ran across your advertisement at the mall. I am deeply disturbed by the messages that it contains. While it may have the good intention to promote healthy living habits, it simultaneously shames overweight children who have little or no control of what food they consume. Taking into account socio-economic status of a child and their family, you must realize that much of their diet is based on structural forces of the available foods around them as well as the amount of money that they can spend on food.
I know that the targeted audience to see this advertisement is parents, however, children are spectators as well. Seeing this image of an overweight boy can create internal oppression at a time in their lives that insecurity is prevalent and acceptance is integral in their lives. Not only can this affect one’s self-image, it also promotes bullying and shaming of overweight children.
As a youth worker, I am critical to the messages that are consumed by my children and because this advertisement is in my neighborhood, I feel there is a need to address these issues. I know children I work with frequently visit this mall to shop and eat and I don’t want them coming out of it carrying these problematic messages. Please be aware of the advertising you are in control of. I am studying health education and I know there are positive ways to go about addressing the obesity issue without the use of what we call “fat shaming.” I am open to discourse and dialogue if you have any response to this. Let’s build on this together and really focus in on creating and promoting healthier habits by providing resources and information, rather than blaming victims of institutional neglect and services.
 In Solidarity, Me.
